Three H13 Air Purifiers Compared, Plus the Filter That Keeps One Running

I have been an HVAC tech for 14 years, and eight of those were spent walking into Portland houses with a particle counter, a smoke pencil, and a homeowner convinced their H13 true HEPA air purifiers were broken. Most of the time the machine was fine. The setup was wrong. It was sized for the wrong room, or the filter was bypassing around the gasket, or it was running on a speed that moved almost no air. Nobody had done the math.

So when I line up three purifiers and one replacement filter, I am not ranking them by how they look on a shelf. I am ranking them by the four questions I ask about anything that claims to clean air. What is the real CADR at the speed you will actually run it? Can I get a seal I trust? What does the filter cost per year? Would I install it in a kid's bedroom?

For a bedroom, the FULMINARE H13 unit is the honest pick, because it is sized for the room it is sold for. For a large open space, the HAP604 is the one whose airflow claims match the space. The VEWIOR is the value gamble. The Levoit Vital 100S-P filter is not a competitor at all. It is the recurring bill that comes with owning the machine it fits.

Here is how the four stack up, with the caveat that none of these listings leads with a CADR number, which is the first thing I look for.

Why it won

The only one here with airflow claims sized for a real living room, plus 360 degree intake and a genuine 20 dB sleep mode

Why it lost

A 20 dB sleep mode tells you nothing about CADR at that speed, and a 1500 sq ft claim is a ceiling, not a target

Why it won

H13 media and a 1200 sq ft claim for the least money of the three purifiers

Why it lost

The number that matters, and why none of these listings lead with it

CADR is Clean Air Delivery Rate, cubic feet per minute of clean air. It is the only spec that predicts whether a machine will change the air in your room. Everything else, the filter grade, the sensor, the app, the light show, is downstream of it.

The rule I use on installs: for four to five air changes per hour in a room with eight foot ceilings, you want a CADR that is at least two thirds of the room's square footage. A 150 square foot bedroom needs roughly 100 CADR. A 500 square foot living room needs roughly 330. That is the whole game. A $99 machine in a 400 square foot room is a fan with a filter and a promise.

Filter grade is a separate conversation. H13 tells you what the media captures when air passes through it. It says nothing about how much air gets through. A H13 filter behind a weak fan is a very good filter doing very little work. That is why "H13 true HEPA" on a box is not a performance claim, and why I get annoyed when a listing shouts "99.97% removal" and never prints a CADR number. Removal percentage is measured in a lab chamber. Your bedroom is not a lab chamber.

Coverage claims work the same way. "Up to 1200 sq ft" or "up to 1500 sq ft" is the point where the machine theoretically makes a dent, not the point where it cleans. Treat every square footage number as the ceiling and cut it in half for real use, especially during wildfire smoke season, which in Portland is now a yearly event rather than a freak occurrence.

The large room pick: HAP604

This is the only unit of the three purifiers here that is built around a big space. Up to 1500 square feet, true HEPA, 360 degree air intake and outlet, 20 dB sleep mode, night light, timer settings.

The 360 degree design is the part I actually like. Air comes in and out from every side, so placement is forgiving. You can drop it in the middle of a room instead of aiming it down a hallway. The trade-off is that a 360 intake will happily pull from the wall six inches behind it if you shove it in a corner, so give it clearance on all sides or you are wasting half the filter surface.

The 20 dB sleep mode is real and it is quiet, and that is exactly the problem. Twenty decibels is about the sound of a quiet bedroom at night. A fan moving meaningful air volume cannot be at 20 dB. So sleep mode is a low-speed setting that keeps the motor turning while you sleep, not a cleaning setting. You run it on high during a smoke event, you accept the noise, and you sleep in the other room if you have to. Physics does not negotiate on this point.

Night light and timer are conveniences. I do not buy a purifier for a night light. But a timer that shuts the unit down after you leave for work is a small, genuine win for filter life.

The value gamble: VEWIOR H13

This one claims H13 true HEPA and coverage up to 1200 square feet, at the lowest price of the three purifiers. On paper it looks like the deal of the group.

Here is my problem with it, and it is not a knock on the machine. It is a knock on how the specs are presented. A 1200 square foot claim and an H13 filter grade are both true statements that can coexist with a fan that moves very little air. I have measured units in this price class that look identical on the listing and differ by a factor of two in real airflow at the same speed setting.

What I would check before buying: can you get replacement filters easily, is there a washable prefilter in front of the HEPA, and does the filter seat with a gasket or just drop into a plastic slot. Bypass is the number one failure on cheap units. Air sneaks around the filter instead of through it, and the machine keeps running, keeps sounding like it is working, and keeps doing nothing. A smoke pencil held at the exhaust will show you in ten seconds what a listing never will.

If it passes those checks, it is a legitimate budget buy for a medium room. If it does not, it is a fan with a filter and a promise.

The bedroom pick: FULMINARE H13

Bedrooms are where budget purifiers earn their keep. A bedroom is 120 to 200 square feet, which means a modest CADR actually delivers real air changes. This unit is sold for bedrooms and it is priced like a bedroom appliance, which tells me the manufacturer knew what it was building.

This is the machine I would put in a kid's room. Not because it is the most powerful, but because it is the right size for the job, and the right size is worth more than extra power you will never use. The classic mistake in this category is buying a bedroom unit and putting it in a living room, then concluding that air purifiers do not work. They work. They just do not scale.

The honest limitation: this is a single room machine. If you have an open floor plan, one of these in the corner is not going to change the air in the kitchen. You would need two, or you would need the HAP604 class of machine, and two bedroom units is often the smarter spend if you actually want both rooms clean.

The bill nobody budgets for: the Levoit Vital 100S-P filter

I put this filter in the comparison on purpose, because filter replacement cost is the real price of any purifier and almost nobody runs the three year math before they buy.

This is a genuine Levoit replacement filter, one pack, for the Vital 100S-P. It supports HEPA sleep mode, uses activated carbon, and is aimed at pet dander, smoke, and allergens. It is the correct part for that machine and nothing else. If you do not own a Vital 100S-P, this product is not for you, and that is the whole point of including it.

Two things I tell every client about replacement filters. First, run the annual cost. A machine that costs less up front and eats a filter every six months can cost more over three years than the machine that looked expensive on day one. Second, I do not care about the brand name on the filter housing. I care about the gasket and the fit. HEPA is HEPA. What matters is whether air goes through the media or around it, and third party filters are where bypass usually shows up. If the price gap between genuine and third party is small, buy the one that seats correctly.

Where each one loses

What I would buy, by room

If you are treating one bedroom and you want the least money spent for real results, the FULMINARE unit is the pick. Size it to the room and it will do its job.

If you have a large open living space, or you live somewhere with wildfire smoke weeks, the HAP604 is the one with the airflow claims to match the space. Run it on high when the AQI climbs and accept that you will hear it.

If you own a Levoit Vital 100S-P, the genuine replacement filter is the correct purchase, and you should be buying it on a schedule rather than waiting for the airflow to drop off, because by the time you notice, the filter has been starving the fan for a month.

And if you are deciding between the VEWIOR and saving up for something bigger, be honest about the room. Measure it. Do the two thirds math. Buy for the room you have, not the room on the box.

What I am testing next

I have eight 2026 "smart" purifiers on the bench right now, across three room sizes, with a smoke chamber test that app-based sensors cannot fake. The pattern so far is exactly what I expected: the app is the most expensive part of the machine, the PM2.5 sensor reads particles and not smells, and the units that measure best in a real room are rarely the ones with the best app.

No purifier gets a recommendation from me without a particle counter reading in an actual room at an actual distance. Not a lab, not a chamber, not a marketing number. If a manufacturer will not publish CADR, that silence is the answer.
